French group Kering and the International Trade Centre are collaborating to promote sustainability within the Madagascar crocodile trade.
The new partnership will lead to a multiple year program that monitors and manages the Nile crocodile trade from Madagascar. With this collaboration and other efforts, Kering is establishing itself as a globally aware brand.
Save the crocodiles
This partnership is following the recommendation by the Standing Committee of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora to reopen the trade of crocodiles from the Nile in Madagascar. The decision to open trade again stems from the new Madagascan national law that manages crocodiles.
The Madagascar Crocodile Conservation and Sustainable Use Program has been established to support sustainable trade that will add economic opportunities to the country. The program will also support the long-term conservation of crocodiles and their habitats.
Kering and the International Trade Center will help with technical and financial support to improve sustainable trade of crocodiles.

The Madagascar Crocodile Conservation and Sustainable Use Program will support many projects like assessing the status of wild populations, monitoring wild egg collections and examining opportunities to enhance local livelihoods.
In a branded statement, Marie-Claire Daveu, the chief sustainability officer and head of international institutional affairs at Kering said “as this new market for sourcing is opening up, we are pleased to be able to support the capacity building that will underpin the implementation of best practices in management of crocodile conservation, sustainable use and trade in Nile crocodiles from Madagascar.”
