Fortnum & Mason marmalade competition
British department store Fortnum & Mason is hosting a marmalade contest to raise money for charity and find its next homemade marmalade producer.
Contestants will be split into varying groups, with the winners of each subset to be awarded, and an overall winner will also be chosen to have their marmalade featured in-store for a year. Fortnum & Mason is likely to spark interest among marmalade makers with this competition and prize, and may cement a personal relationship with marmalade enthusiasts of Britain.
Marmalade makers
Fortnum & Mason's annual celebration of the invention of marmalade takes place at Dalemain Mansion in Cumbria, U.K. The marmalade competition is open to first-timers, amateurs and artisans.
There will be 15 categories at this year's competition that will embrace every type of marmalade maker. For example, marmalades made by men, military marmalade, a children's competition and others.
Marmalade competition activities
Each jar entered will be given scores out of 20, and there will be awarded bronze, silver and gold certificates in each category. The overall winner will be chosen from all categories and awarded the "Double Gold Star Award."
Winners will have the opportunity to have their marmalade produced commercially and sold for a year at Fortnum & Mason.
Some of the proceeds from the marmalades sold in-store will go to Dalemain’s nominated charities. The competition has raised more than $227,000 for charity since its inception 10 years ago.
Paddington Bear, often known for his love of marmalade, will be present at the event.
Entrants must submit their applications by Feb. 15. The competition is from Feb. 28 to March 1.
