British automaker Land Rover is continuing its support of wildlife charity Born Free through its partnership on a new lion enclosure and visitor center in Ensessakotteh, Ethiopia.

“The Tree House” has been remodeled to accommodate thousands of students each year, with classroom facilities that allow for interactive learning activities such as writing workshops and role-playing. By focusing on educating the next generation, Land Rover can help to make a difference in the conservation and treatment of lions.

Educational impact
Born Free works to provide "compassionate conservation" by working to prevent animal suffering and save endangered species. The charity also works with governments on animal control.

The 77 hectares of wilderness at the center in Ensessakotteh provide a home to more than 70 animals who have been orphaned or who have been rescued from illegal traders or owners. The sanctuary blends safety with the feeling of a natural habitat.

In addition to supporting this newly redesigned center, a Land Rover Defender is on-site for staff to carry out their duties, such as transporting food and supplies.

In a brand statement, Mark Cameron, global brand experience director at Jaguar Land Rover, said, “The redevelopment of the centre at Ensessakotteh is a project that Land Rover and Born Free have been working towards for some time. The facility will provide a protective environment to care for the wildlife. The center will also play a vital role in educating young people about the importance of conservation and will make a real difference by spreading awareness about how people can adapt their lives and attitudes to ensure a sustainable future for man and wildlife alike.”

Land Rover's work with Born Free fits in with its greater sustainability efforts.

Jaguar Land Rover is among the brands being transparent about their corporate responsibility through participation in Business in the Community’s 2015 CR Index.

The thirteenth annual list from the charity organization serves as a benchmark for brands to measure their sustainability progress. As Responsible Business Week ran from April 20-26, the brands that shared their efforts publicly will act as examples of companies making a contribution to something greater (see story).
