Fondation Louis Vuitton is on the grounds of Jardin d'Acclimatation
The Fondation Louis Vuitton will host an exhibition this coming October in celebration of New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
The co-organized exhibition, “Etre Moderne: Le MoMA à Paris,” will open Oct. 11 and will recount the New York museum’s history of modern and contemporary art collection. Luxury goods conglomerate LVMH opened the Frank Gehry-designed building just outside of Paris’ city center to support the arts through exhibitions, performances and events.

Fondation Louis Vuitton’s Etre Moderne: Le MoMA à Paris is the first comprehensive exhibition in France to present MoMA’s unparalleled collection of modern art.
From Oct. 11 through March 5, 2018, visitors to Fondation Louis Vuitton can explore an integrated, cross-disciplinary selection of 200 works. The collection draws from MoMA’s six curatorial departments and reflects the museum’s history and its approach to art collecting.
Pieces from MoMA will fill the entirety of Fondation Louis Vuitton for the extent of the five-month exhibition. The Etre Moderne: Le MoMA à Paris exhibit also follows the interior spaces of the Fondation Louis Vuitton building to create a linear historical narrative across four floors.
The 200 pieces selected for Etre Moderne: Le MoMA à Paris were curated jointly by the two institutions and include paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, films, media works, performances, architecture and design objects. Masterpieces by artists including Max Beckmann, Paul Cézanne, Marcel Duchamp, Yayoi Kusama, Pablo Picasso and others will be on view.
A selection of rarely shown documentary materials on loan from MoMA's archives will also be on view to trace the museum's history and to add context to the featured artwork.

Etre Moderne: Le MoMA à Paris organization has been under the direction of MoMA director Glenn Lowry and Suzanna Page, Foundation Louis Vuitton's artistic director. The exhibition was curated by MoMA's Quentin Bajac, chief curator of photography, with assistance by Katerina Stathpoulou, assistant curator at MoMA, and Olivier Michelon, curator of Fondation Louis Vuitton. The archival sections were overseen by Michelle Elligot, chief of archives at MoMA.
In a past exhibition, Fondation Louis Vuitton celebrated the contemporary art scene of China. Fondation Louis Vuitton’s “Bentu, Chinese artists at a time of turbulence and transformation” exhibition was the first showing entirely devoted to contemporary Chinese art in France in the past decade (see story).
Another saw Fondation Louis Vuitton overtaken by colors via a temporary art installation dressing the building’s exterior.
The elaborate installation, titled “Observatory of Light,” covered LVMH’s Fondation Louis Vuitton with a “play of projections, reflections and transparencies” across its 12 sails. As a patron of the arts, Fondation Louis Vuitton has housed many art exhibitions since its opening, but this marked the first time the building itself was the focal point of the piece on display (see story).
